The Arctic Revisited
One of Schaller’s first research assignments was to complete a biological survey of the land that was to become the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. 50 years later in 2006, he returned to document the changes he saw. Students are asked to study two of his photographs, as well as write and discuss their observations. Can be used in science classes.

Wildlife Journaling
It’s difficult to imagine a world without technology, but Schaller’s most important field research tools were his notebook and pencil. He would often spend hours and hours quietly observing the natural world around him. Students are asked to do some of their own wildlife journaling over several days. Can be used in writing or science classes.

Develop a Conservation Campaign
Schaller knew his conservation missions would never succeed unless he could get the support of local people behind him. He would often times utilize some unusual methods in which to convey his conservation message. Students will use the tools they have to create their own conservation campaign. Can be used in science or communications classes.
